About Nailsworth

Nailsworth is an inner northern suburb of Adelaide in the City of Prospect, located approximately 4 kilometres north of the Adelaide central business district. Built on traditional Kaurna lands and established through land transactions from the 1830s, the Nailsworth Village was established in 1851 from 64 allotments and named after Enoch Fry's birthplace of Nailsworth in Gloucestershire, England. The first Prospect post office was located here from 1861 to around 1872, marked by two tall palm trees planted so people could find it from a distance. The heritage-listed North Road Cemetery was founded by Bishop Augustus Short in 1853 and contains the graves of prominent South Australians including Aboriginal welfare worker and anthropologist Daisy Bates and philanthropist Julia Farr. In 1930 the schoolyard was the site of a shootout between police and four escaped convicts from Yatala Labour Prison.
