About Kensington Gardens
Kensington Gardens is an eastern residential suburb of Adelaide in the City of Burnside, South Australia. Originally known as Pile's Paddock after James Pile who arrived in South Australia in 1849, the land was reserved as a public recreation ground around 1908 on condition a tramline be built. The Kensington Wama or Kensington Gardens Reserve occupies 40 acres and was renamed after Kensington Gardens in London around 1910. The electric tram extension opened in 1909 as part of Adelaide's first electrified line. Stonyfell Creek runs through the reserve and the south-east corner was once a Kaurna burial ground. The lawn bowls and tennis club was established in 1919 by World War I veterans.
