About Murgon
Murgon is a rural town and locality in the South Burnett Region of Queensland, located 247 kilometres northwest of Brisbane and 45.5 kilometres north-northeast of Kingaroy on traditional Wakka Wakka Aboriginal land. The railway arrived on 14 September 1903 and the town became the administrative centre for the former Shire of Murgon. The Queensland Dairy and Heritage Museum at 2 Sommerville Street preserves the town's dairy farming heritage. The Murgon War Memorial and Civic Centre, the Murgon State School and the former South Burnett Co-operative Dairy Association Factory are all heritage-listed. The railway was closed in 2010 and converted to the 88 kilometre Kilkivan to Kingaroy Rail Trail which opened in 2017. The Murgon fossil site is the only site in Australia with diverse vertebrate fauna dating to the early Eocene, approximately 55 million years ago.
