About Avenell Heights
Avenell Heights is a residential suburb of Bundaberg in the Bundaberg Region, Queensland, Australia, situated approximately 3.1 kilometres south of Bundaberg Central. The suburb lies on flat terrain on Taribelang Bunda Country, bounded by the North Coast railway line to the west. The area was originally dominated by sugar cane farming before transitioning to residential use during the post-war expansion of Bundaberg. Officially named by the Queensland Place Names Board on 1 January 1967, the suburb takes its name from the Avenell family, prominent early merchants and landowners in the district who established a store in Bundaberg in 1898. The Bundaberg Racecourse occupies a 36-hectare site in the north-west of the suburb, and the former Thabeban railway station once served the area adjacent to the racecourse.
