About Millaroo

Millaroo is a rural locality in the Shire of Burdekin, Queensland, situated on the northern bank of the Burdekin River approximately 100 kilometres southeast of Townsville and 50 kilometres inland from the Coral Sea. The area was established as a soldier settlement after World War II, initially growing tobacco before the completion of the Burdekin Gorge Weir in 1953 enabled a switch to sugarcane. The Millaroo Research Station, established in 1952 by the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Stock, conducted agricultural research benefiting North Queensland primary industries for decades.
