About Kleinton

Kleinton is a rural locality in the Toowoomba Region of Queensland, located 2.2 kilometres north of Highfields and 16.9 kilometres north of the Toowoomba central business district on the Darling Downs. Named after early selector Michael Klein who was shot dead at Highfields in February 1870 by James Alexander Herlich following a dispute, the Crows Nest railway line operated through the area from 1883 to 1961. Kleinton State School opened on 20 February 1911 on a 2-acre site donated by the Brazier family who also owned local brickworks, and is believed to be Queensland's oldest one-teacher school built with brick. The school closed in December 1970 and in 1975 the Amaroo Environmental Education Centre opened in the former building. The Mount Kingsthorpe Bushland Reserve rises to 600 metres in the south-east offering panoramic views.
