About Kowanyama
Kowanyama is a town on the western coast of Cape York Peninsula in far north Queensland, set on Magnificent Creek about 20 km inland from the Gulf of Carpentaria, at the mouth of the Mitchell River. Its name means place of many waters in the local Kunjen and Yir-Yoront languages. The town grew from the Mitchell River Mission, founded in 1916, and is one of the largest Indigenous communities on Cape York. During the wet season it is cut off by road and served by air, and the surrounding wetlands and river are known for barramundi fishing and abundant birdlife.
