About Keriri Island
Keriri Island is a locality in the Torres Strait Island Region of Queensland, consisting only of Hammond Island, whose Indigenous name is Keriri. The island lies in the Prince of Wales group south of Thursday Island and is home to the Kaurareg people. It was the site of pearling and a brief gold rush in the late 1800s, and later a Catholic mission settlement from 1929. Its single town, Hammond Island, is linked to Thursday Island by ferry.
