About Bunya
Bunya is a residential suburb in the City of Moreton Bay, Queensland, located 18.9 kilometres northwest of the Brisbane central business district. The name is derived from the Kabi language word bonyi or bunyi meaning the bunya pine tree, Araucaria bidwillii. The suburb is home to the Bunyaville Conservation Park managed by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, which protects a small community of broad-leaved spotted gum found only in the Brisbane region. The South Pine River forms the northern boundary and the historic Bunya Crossing is a ford across the river. Bunya State School opened on 25 January 1875 and closed on 21 February 1965. The James Drysdale Recreation Reserve hosts the Pine Hills Pythons football club in Capital League 1 and the Bunyaville Environmental Education Centre provides outdoor education at Old Northern Road.
