About Burpengary

Burpengary is a town in the City of Moreton Bay, Queensland, situated approximately 37 kilometres north of Brisbane along the Bruce Highway. The name derives from the Aboriginal word "burpengar," meaning "place of the green wattle," referring to the Acacia decurrens tree, and the area lies on the traditional lands of the Kabi Kabi people. European settlement began in the 1870s with timber-cutting, as logs were floated down Burpengary Creek to Deception Bay, followed by brief sugar cane cultivation and later dairy farming. The railway reached Burpengary in 1888, and the town initially served as a strategic truckstop on the North Coast Road before transitioning into a commuter suburb from the 1970s onward. The town retains a heritage-listed 1917 concrete railway shelter shed and features facilities including the Burpengary Equestrian Centre and an aquatic leisure centre.
