About Walkerston
Walkerston is a town and locality in Mackay Region, Queensland, on the Peak Downs Highway about 14 kilometres south-west of Mackay, bounded by the Pioneer River to the north. The town straddles Bakers Creek for about 3 kilometres, and its banks were once so thick with wild scrub that the settlement was known as Scrubby Creek from as early as 1866, a name used interchangeably with Baker's Creek and, later, Walkerston. The combined town was named in 1881 after John Walker, lessee of the nearby Homebush pastoral run.
