About Clermont
Clermont is a rural town and locality in the Isaac Region of central Queensland. The discovery of gold in 1861 triggered one of Queensland's major gold rushes, and the town was proclaimed in 1864 and named after Clermont-Ferrand in France, ancestral home of a pioneer grazier of the district. In 1916 a flood that killed 65 of the town's 1,500 residents drove the rebuilding of Clermont on higher ground, with surviving buildings moved by steam traction engine. Today it is a major hub for the region's coal mines and a service town for agricultural properties.
