About Bakers Creek (Qld)
Bakers Creek is a rural town and coastal locality in the Mackay Region of Queensland, located 9.3 kilometres south-southwest of the Mackay central business district. Named after the creek which was named after John I. Baker, a customs officer in Mackay in 1863, the locality was the site of Australia's worst aviation disaster by death toll in 1943 when a USAAF aircraft crashed killing 40 of 41 on board. A memorial is at the Bakers Creek Community Hall built in 1981. The Thomas Borthwick and Sons meat processing plant is a major halal-certified facility exporting to China, the European Union, Japan, the Middle East and the United States. Dundula State School opened on 28 August 1922. Land use is predominantly sugarcane farming served by cane tramways. Bakers Creek Conservation Park is north of the creek mouth.
