About Tamborine

Tamborine is a rural locality in South East Queensland, situated approximately 60 kilometres south of Brisbane at the intersection of the Beaudesert-Beenleigh Road and Tamborine Mountain Road, near the Albert River. The name derives from the Yugambeh language of the Wanggeriburra clan, from the word Tchambreen, meaning "place of yams." European settlers took up pastoral leases in the area from 1843, and Thomas Plunkett established the first store and post office in the 1870s. St Patrick's Catholic Church, built in the early 1870s, remains in use. A railway line from Logan Village to Canungra operated through the locality from 1915 to 1955. During World War II, the American Army established Camp Cable nearby in 1942. The surrounding area includes sections of the Tamborine National Park, Queensland's first national park, declared in 1908.
