About Stanthorpe
Stanthorpe is a rural town in the Southern Downs Region of Queensland, the main centre of the Granite Belt, lying in the valley of Quart Pot Creek. It grew as a tin-mining town in the 1870s, and when tin prices fell many miners turned to farming, finding the cool climate well suited to apples, stone fruit and grapes. Wine was first made in the area in the 1860s, and today orchards and vineyards, along with sheep and cattle grazing, dominate the surrounding country.
