About St George (Qld)

St George is a town on the Balonne River in south-west Queensland and the administrative centre of the Shire of Balonne. The river crossing was named by explorer Major Thomas Mitchell, who camped there on St George's Day in 1846. A service centre for wheat, sheep and cotton farms, the town is the hub of a large irrigation district supplied by Beardmore Dam on the Balonne.
