About Cardstone

Cardstone is a rural locality in the Cassowary Coast Region of far north Queensland, a long thin area following the valley of the Tully River. It grew around a village built in the 1950s to house workers of the Kareeya Hydro Power Station, and is mostly surrounded by the rainforest of Tully Gorge National Park, part of the World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics. The name combines Cardwell and Johnstone, the shires that developed the scheme.
