About Hawthorne

Hawthorne is an inner-eastern suburb of the City of Brisbane, Queensland, situated approximately 6.5 kilometres east of the Brisbane CBD. The suburb's name is attributed to either early settler William Baynes, who may have named it after Hawthorn in Victoria upon his arrival in 1859, or to hawthorn bushes he planted in the area during the 1850s and 1860s. Originally a farming district from the 1860s, Hawthorne developed through estate subdivisions in the 1880s, aided by the establishment of ferry and tram services. The suburb features the heritage-listed Hawthorne ferry terminal and Hardcastle Park along the Brisbane River, as well as Lourdes Hill College, a Catholic girls' school established in 1916. The Hawthorne Cinema, opened in the 1940s, remains a notable local landmark. The suburb is well served by CityCat ferry, bus, and nearby rail services at Morningside.
