About Hemmant
Hemmant is an eastern riverside suburb of the City of Brisbane, Queensland, located 17 kilometres east of the Brisbane CBD. Named after William Hemmant, a local parliamentarian and treasurer in the Macalister government from 1873 to 1876, the area was settled for fruit and vegetable farming from 1858 with sugar cane farming and mills following in the 1860s. The Queensport Aquarium, opened in 1889 with a zoo, aquarium and dance halls, was damaged in the 1893 flood. Heritage-listed sites include the Hemmant Gun Battery from World War II, the Queensport Hotel and a former US Army transmitting station. Hemmant Quarry Reserve provides walking tracks and picnic facilities.
