About Dunwich
Dunwich is a town on the western side of North Stradbroke Island, off Brisbane, reached by vehicle ferry from Cleveland, and one of three towns on the island. Known to the Nunukul people as Goompi, it was established in 1827 as a convict outpost and later served as a quarantine station before becoming the Dunwich Benevolent Asylum in 1864. Surviving asylum-era buildings, including St Mark's Church and the public hall, now house the island's historical museum.
