About Canteen Creek
Canteen Creek, also known as Owairtilla, is an Aboriginal community on Alyawarr land in the Northern Territory's Barkly Region, about 183 km south-east of Tennant Creek. It was founded in the early 1980s by residents who moved out of town to live on country, and it remains a dry, alcohol-free community. The settlement has a general store, health centre, church and a coeducational P-12 school, and is accessible by road and a small airstrip. In 2025 the surrounding Wakaya-Alyawarr country was formally handed back to its traditional owners.
