About Anindilyakwa
Anindilyakwa is a locality on Groote Eylandt, the largest island in the Gulf of Carpentaria, about 629 kilometres east of Darwin. Named after the Anindilyakwa Land Council, the area contains three communities: Angurugu, Umbakumba and Alyangula, and is home to the GEMCO manganese mine. The Anindilyakwa Indigenous Protected Area covers the archipelago, and 14 clan groups maintain strong cultural traditions tied to the island and surrounding waters.
