About Alyangula
Alyangula is the largest township on Groote Eylandt, the fourth-largest Australian island, in the Gulf of Carpentaria in the Northern Territory. Purpose-built in the 1960s as a worker residence for the GEMCO manganese mine, which produces approximately 3.8 million tonnes annually and is one of the world's largest manganese operations. The island is the traditional land of the Anindilyakwa people, who form an Indigenous Protected Area, and is known for outstanding sport-fishing and diverse native wildlife.
