About Nightcliff
Nightcliff is a coastal northern suburb of Darwin, Northern Territory, situated on the traditional lands of the Larrakia people and overlooking the Beagle Gulf. The name originates from an 1839 landing by crew of HMS Beagle, who scrambled up coastal cliffs by lantern light after dark, as recorded by Lieutenant John Lort Stokes. It appeared on Surveyor-General George Goyder's 1869 plan of Port Darwin and was formally adopted as "Nightcliff" in 1948. During the Second World War, the foreshore hosted RAAF defensive camps and a naval artillery outpost. Today, the suburb is known for its foreshore walkway, jetty, swimming pool, and the annual Nightcliff Seabreeze Festival.
