About Freshwater (NSW)
Freshwater is a coastal suburb on Sydney's Northern Beaches, about 17 km northeast of the CBD between Manly and Curl Curl. Known as the birthplace of Australian surfing, it was the site of Duke Kahanamoku's landmark surfing demonstration in 1914. The suburb has a relaxed seaside village feel centred on Freshwater Beach and the dining strip on Oliver Street, with surrounding bushland and sandstone geography. It was formerly known as Harbord until officially renamed in 2008.
