About Eureka (NSW)
Eureka is a locality and village in the Byron Shire of New South Wales, 27 kilometres from Byron Bay and 4.4 kilometres south-west of the larger village of Federal. Its traditional owners are the Bundjalung (Wiyabal) people. The area was earlier known by several names including North Clunes, Whian and Purgatory, the last because of its ticks, before the name Eureka was popularised in 1883 after the opening of the Eureka Boarding House, which became the Eureka Hotel in 1885.
