About Cabbage Tree Island (Ballina - NSW)
Cabbage Tree Island is an island in the Richmond River in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, about 4 kilometres south of Wardell in the Ballina Shire. It is a predominantly Aboriginal community on the lands of the Bundjalung people, with its own public school. After catastrophic floods in 2022, most residents were relocated off the island, and the state government judged the future flood risk to be too high to rebuild the community there.
