About Boolaroo
Boolaroo is a suburb and former town of Greater Newcastle in the City of Lake Macquarie, New South Wales, located 19 kilometres west of Newcastle. The name is an Aboriginal word meaning place of many flies or place of may flies. Founded as a village in 1829 and proclaimed a town in 1896, the Boolaroo Jockey Club ran race meetings from 1907 to 1931. The suburb was the epicentre of the 1989 Newcastle earthquake, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake. The Cockle Creek lead and zinc smelter operated on the site until 12 September 2003 and has since been cleared. Cockle Creek railway station on the Central Coast and Newcastle Line serves the suburb. The traditional owners are the Awabakal people.
