About Mungindi (NSW)
Mungindi is a rural town and locality straddling the Barwon River, which forms the border between New South Wales and Queensland, on the Carnarvon Highway. Its name is a Kamilaroi word meaning waterhole in the river, and it is one of the few border towns in the Southern Hemisphere to carry the same name on both sides of the state line. The town grew as a river crossing and stock route, and was the northern terminus of a railway from New South Wales that operated from 1914 to 1974. The district is a hub for cotton, beef and wheat production.
