About Jerilderie

Jerilderie is a town in the central Riverina region of New South Wales, on the Newell Highway beside Billabong Creek, which at 321 kilometres is reputedly the longest creek in Australia. Established in 1859, it is the only New South Wales town raided by Ned Kelly and his gang, who in February 1879 locked the police in their own cells and stole £2140. The gang left behind the Jerilderie Letter, a lengthy written manifesto, and 16 raid sites survive on the Ned Kelly Raid Trail. The town was also the childhood home of General Sir John Monash.
