About East Maitland

East Maitland occupies elevated ground east of the Hunter River, originally surveyed in 1829 as the planned government town for the Hunter region. It retains significant heritage buildings in local sandstone, including Maitland Gaol and the courthouse, alongside later residential development. The suburb lies along the New England Highway, neighbouring West Maitland's commercial centre.
