About Ashtonfield
Ashtonfield is a residential and semi-rural suburb in the City of Maitland, located in the lower Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Australia. Situated approximately 16 kilometres west of Newcastle, it is bordered by East Maitland, Metford, Thornton, Four Mile Creek, and Louth Park. The suburb is notable as the site of Bloomfield Colliery, an open-cut coal mine that has been in continuous operation since 1937, named after Lieutenant Thomas Valentine Bloomfield, an early landholder in the Hunter region. Ashtonfield features Ashtonfield Public School, which opened in 2007 on Norfolk Street, and is in close proximity to Stockland Green Hills shopping centre in neighbouring East Maitland. The area retains a mix of newer residential development alongside its coal mining heritage, positioned just 30 kilometres from the Port of Newcastle.
