Portland is a historic mining town in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, located 26 kilometres north-west of Lithgow and 48 kilometres east-north-east of Bathurst. Named after Australia's first cement works, the town was gazetted in 1894 and declared a town in 1906. The Commonwealth Portland Cement Company established operations in 1902, producing cement that helped build Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra. Many original buildings were constructed by the cement works company for employees and still stand. The heritage-listed Portland Cement Works Precinct and Raffan's Mill and Brick Bottle Kilns are local landmarks. The town is at 925 metres above sea level with four distinct seasons and snowfalls each winter. The suburb had a population of 2,424 at the 2016 census.
