About O'Connell (NSW)
O'Connell is a village in the Central West of New South Wales, on the Fish River about 23 km from Oberon on the O'Connell Road. Surveyor George Evans named the surrounding O'Connell Plains in 1813 after Lieutenant-Governor Maurice Charles O'Connell, describing the country as the handsomest he had ever seen. The village was a staging post on the original Sydney to Bathurst road and is today classified as a heritage conservation area, with buildings dating back to the 1820s.
