About Barton
Barton is a suburb in the South Canberra district of the Australian Capital Territory, located 4 kilometres south of the Canberra central business district adjacent to Capital Hill. Named after Sir Edmund Barton, the first Prime Minister of Australia, settlement began in 1922 and the suburb was gazetted on 20 September 1928. The heritage-listed Barton Housing Precinct was built from 1926 to 1927 to house public servants for the opening of Parliament House. The suburb contains several significant heritage sites including the Hotel Kurrajong where Prime Minister Ben Chifley died in 1951, the Brassey Hotel in American Colonial Revival style, Telopea Park School designed by John Smith Murdoch and the Edmund Barton Building. Major government departments including the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, the Attorney-General's Department and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade are headquartered here.
