About Torbanlea
Torbanlea is a historic rural town in the Fraser Coast Region of Queensland, located about 24 kilometres west-southwest of Hervey Bay on the Burrum River. Coal was discovered here in the 1860s and the Torbanlea Colliery Company was floated in 1884, giving the town its identity. The 1900 colliery disaster, which killed five miners, prompted a Royal Commission into Queensland mining practices. Today the Burrum Mining Museum preserves this heritage, and the town is known for its annual Picnic Races.
