About Mount Evelyn
Mount Evelyn is a suburb about 37 km east of the Melbourne CBD, in the Shire of Yarra Ranges, nestling in a bend of the Olinda Creek. It grew around a railway station opened in 1901 on the Lilydale to Warburton line, the line's highest point, and took its present name in 1919 when 'Mount' was added to promote the healthy mountain setting. The closed line now carries the Warburton Rail Trail through the suburb, and southern parts of Mount Evelyn lie within the Dandenong Ranges National Park. The district boomed in the early 1930s during construction of the nearby Silvan Dam and Mount Evelyn Aqueduct.
