About Burwood (Vic.)
Burwood is an inner eastern suburb of Melbourne, about 14 km east of the central business district, within the Cities of Monash and Whitehorse. First settled as the village of Ballyshanassy in the 1850s and surveyed in 1858, it was renamed Norwood and then Burwood in 1879, after a house of that name built in Hawthorn in 1852. The suburb is home to the Burwood campus of Deakin University.
