About Wickepin
Wickepin is a town in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, about 38 km east of Narrogin and 214 km south-east of Perth. The town developed after the Great Southern Railway reached the district and land was opened up in the 1890s; it was gazetted in 1908 and became a railhead when the Narrogin-Wickepin line opened in 1909, growing quickly as a service centre with banks, shops and one of the biggest Ford dealerships in the southern hemisphere. Wickepin is associated with wheatbelt author Dorothy Hewett, who lived on a farm nearby in the 1920s and 1930s and set poems and plays in the area, and Albert Facey's house stands on the main street as a museum.
