About Popanyinning

Popanyinning is a small town in the Wheatbelt of Western Australia, in the Shire of Cuballing on the Great Southern Highway between Pingelly and Narrogin. Its name is said to come from a Noongar word meaning waterhole, in reference to a large waterhole once used by local Aboriginal people and wild horses near the townsite. The town grew with the construction of the Great Southern Railway, with the first pioneers arriving in 1893, and had become a thriving agricultural service centre by the early 1900s.
