About Ongerup

Ongerup is a town in the Shire of Gnowangerup in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, 410 kilometres south-east of Perth and 54 kilometres east of Gnowangerup. The name means place of the male kangaroo in the local Noongar language. The townsite was gazetted in 1912, and a 94-kilometre branch railway from Tambellup served the district from 1913 until 1957. Ongerup services the local grain and wool farms, and the Yongergnow Australian Malleefowl Centre, opened in 2007, promotes conservation of the malleefowl.
