About Port Hedland
Port Hedland is a port town in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, known to the local Kariyarra and Nyamal people as Marapikurrinya. The harbour was noted by Swedish mariner Peter Hedland in 1863, and the town site was gazetted in 1896. Port Hedland is the site of the highest-tonnage port in Australia, exporting iron ore railed from inland mines along with salt and other minerals, making it the second-largest town in the Pilbara.
