About Medina

Medina is a suburb in the City of Kwinana, Western Australia, located 32 kilometres south of the Perth central business district. Named after the ship Medina which arrived at Fremantle on 6 July 1830 carrying 51 settlers to the Swan River Colony, the ship's name derives from the River Medina on the Isle of Wight. The suburb was designed in the early 1950s by Margaret Feilman, Perth's first female town planner, as the first of four neighbourhood units built to support the new Kwinana industrial area. Streets are named after passengers and crew including Pace Road after Captain Walter Pace. The 1950s construction included Australia's largest oil refinery, Cockburn Cement works, a BHP blast furnace and steel-rolling mill. The Chalk Hill Lookout offers panoramic views.
