About Gorae

Gorae is a rural locality in south-west Victoria about 15 kilometres north-west of Portland, its name said to derive from an Aboriginal word for kangaroo. The district developed as timber and grazing country supplying the port of Portland, with a sawmill operating from the late 1880s and apple orchards from about 1910 until the 1930s. A school opened in 1881 and a Wesleyan church in 1898, reflecting a close-knit farming community.
