About Barmah

Barmah is a town on the Murray River in the Shire of Moira, Victoria, distinctive for sitting in a bend of the river that leaves it north of the main course of the New South Wales border. It lies beside the world's largest river red gum forest; the Barmah National Park on the river floodplain is an important breeding ground for Murray cod when the river floods through the narrow channel known as the Barmah choke. The forest is Ramsar-listed wetland and an Important Bird Area, and is the breeding ground of the vulnerable superb parrot.
