About Mathoura
Mathoura is a small town in the Riverina region of southern New South Wales, in the Murray River Council area on the Cobb Highway. Its name may derive from a Yorta Yorta word meaning windy. The settlement began in the 1840s as Redbank, after the red-coloured rocks of the nearby Cadell Fault scarp, and was served by Cobb & Co coach services before the railway arrived in 1876. The railway station, renamed Mathoura in 1879, later supported a sawmilling and timber trade, and a flour mill was established in 1882.
