About Swan Hill
Swan Hill is a city in north-western Victoria on the south bank of the Murray River, on the Murray Valley Highway downstream of the Loddon River junction. It was named by explorer Thomas Mitchell in 1836, grew around a river punt crossing in the 1840s and flourished as a paddle-steamer river port from 1853. Its best-known attraction, the Pioneer Settlement, recreates the district's river-boat and farming past around the paddle steamer Gem, and the surrounding irrigation district supports a wine region.
