About Pomonal
Pomonal is a town in the Rural City of Ararat in western Victoria, 245 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, on the road between Ararat and Halls Gap in the Grampians. Originally called Pomona after the Roman goddess of fruit, reflecting the district's orchards, it was renamed Pomonal in 1904. The explorer Thomas Mitchell camped near the future town site in 1836 before climbing Mount William. The district's orchards were devastated by the Black Friday bushfires of 1939, and a fire that began in the Grampians in February 2024 destroyed many homes in the town.
