About Ouyen
Ouyen is a town in the Rural City of Mildura in north-west Victoria, at the junction of the Calder Highway and the Mallee Highway, 105 kilometres south of Mildura. It grew up around the railway station built in 1906 on the line to Mildura, and its name is thought to come from a Wergaia word meaning pink-eared duck or ghost waterhole. Ouyen is the commercial and grain-handling centre of a sheep and cropping district, and is home to the Big Mallee Root monument.
