About Nandaly
Nandaly is a small town in the Mallee region of Victoria, on the Calder Highway about 388 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, west of Lake Tyrrell. The name is thought to come from an Aboriginal word describing fire. The railway arrived in 1914 and the town and its post office opened in November that year, as the surrounding mallee scrub was being cleared for farm selections. A school followed in 1916 and a hall in 1918. After the highway was re-routed the town declined, and today only a handful of services remain.
